« Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working », this quote, commonly attributed to Pablo Picasso, reminds us that ideas rarely emerge without commitment, practice, or perseverance. Yet it doesn’t always fit the reality…
- The symptoms -
Sometimes, we sit down in front of a blank page, a computer, or a musical instrument with a genuine desire to create... and nothing happens.
The sentences feel artificial, the sketches clumsy, and every attempt seems unsatisfactory and/or unfinished. After several unsuccessful efforts, one conclusion becomes inevitable : we are lacking inspiration.
And yet, the problem is not a lack of ideas, but rather a lack of mental availability. In other words, we confuse the symptoms with the causes.
This distinction is essential :
Research in cognitive psychology shows that our ability to focus, think, and create relies on limited resources. These resources do not disappear, but they can be temporarily monopolised.
- The phenomena -
The term creative block refers to any difficulty in producing a new idea :
The subjective experience is always the same : something that once felt natural suddenly becomes inaccessible. But this feeling tells us nothing about its origin.
Psychology defines creativity as the ability to produce an idea that is both new and suited to a given context. This involves two complementary dimensions : originality and relevance. An original but unusable idea is not truly creative. Nor is a relevant but entirely commonplace one. Inspiration may be one of the driving forces behind this process, but it is neither its only prerequisite nor a guarantee of success.
Mental unavailability, meanwhile, does not reflect a decline in creativity itself. It corresponds to a temporary reduction in the cognitive resources available for activities requiring thought, imagination, and mental exploration.
To understand the difference, let us imagine a library :
The knowledge and ideas are still there. But accessing them becomes difficult. Our intellectual abilities depend not only on what we know, but also on our capacity to draw upon that knowledge at the right time
This explains why we sometimes regain a measure of creativity while taking a walk, in the shower, on a train journey, or a few days after a particularly stressful period has ended. We have not acquired new skills within the space of a few hours, rather, we have regained a cognitive state that allows ideas to emerge more freely. (EUREKA!)
- The final straw -
Contrary to popular belief, the human brain cannot process an unlimited amount of information. At any given moment, several cognitive processes are competing for a shared resource : our attention.
A decline in creative performance may simply result from temporary cognitive overload. In other words, the instrument is still working; it is merely playing in a room where the noise has become so overwhelming that it can no longer be heard.
1. The mind's workspace
Whenever we think, write, or solve a problem, we rely on what psychologists’ call working memory.
British psychologist Alan Baddeley, whose research has had a profound influence on cognitive science, describes it as a system that allows us to temporarily retain information while manipulating it. Unlike long-term memory, which stores our knowledge for years, working memory acts as an immediate processing space.
It can be compared to a desk. A desk can only hold a limited number of documents. If too many files pile up, it becomes difficult to use the scattered information to write a text or solve a complex problem.
The brain operates according to a similar principle. Our knowledge is rarely lost. However, our ability to draw upon several pieces of information simultaneously has very real limits.
Writing an article, composing music, or imagining an original solution requires us to keep several ideas active at once, establish connections between them, discard some, and explore others in greater depth. All these operations place considerable demands on working memory. When it becomes overloaded, creativity naturally becomes more difficult.
2. The accumulation of thoughts
The concept of cognitive load, developed notably by Australian psychologist John Sweller, refers to the amount of mental resources required to perform a task.
Some activities require little effort. Others place considerable demands on our attention. The problem arises when several demands begins to accumulate.
During an ordinary day, even before starting an important project, our brain may already have had to :
None of these tasks is necessarily overwhelming in itself. However, as they accumulate, they gradually consume an increasing share of our cognitive resources.
Psychologists sometimes refer to the Zeigarnik effect, named after researcher Bluma Zeigarnik, who observed that unfinished tasks tend to remain particularly prominent in our memory. Therefore, when we finally sit down to write, our brain does not begin with an empty workspace, it arrives already burdened.
3. The invisible cost
Added to everything mentioned above is the growing number of decisions we have to make. Throughout the day, we are constantly choosing :
The concept of decision fatigue was popularised in the early 2000s, notably through the work of Roy Baumeister. Although recent research has qualified certain aspects of this theory, one idea remains widely accepted : repeatedly making decisions draws upon our cognitive resources and may affect the quality of the choices we make afterwards. In other words, thinking requires energy.
Creating requires even more. Creativity involves exploring several possibilities, assessing their value, abandoning some, and developing others. This constant back and forth between imagination and selection places considerable demands on our decision-making processes.
4. Urgent matters
When faced with an accumulation of problems, our brain naturally prioritises the information it considers most urgent. Immediate concerns then take precedence.
This mechanism explains why, during particularly demanding periods, it can feel as though our imagination has vanished. In reality, the brain has not given up on creating. It has simply postponed the process until conditions become favourable again.
- Neuroscience -
For decades, creativity was regarded as an almost mysterious faculty. Advances in neuroscience have gradually challenged this view.
1. The creative brain
For a long time, one idea became deeply ingrained : artists supposedly relied more on their « right hemisphere », while scientists primarily used their « left hemisphere ».
In reality, both hemispheres work together continuously during most activities. Creativity, like scientific thinking, does not result from one hemisphere being more active than the other, but from the coordination of networks distributed throughout the brain. In other words, we continuously alternate between different ways of processing information.
2. The laboratory of ideas
One of the most significant discoveries has been the identification of the Default Mode Network (DMN).
This network is primarily activated when our attention is not focused on a specific task. The DMN plays a role in several functions involved in creativity :
In other words, it explores, brings together seemingly unrelated concepts, establishes unexpected connections, and imagines what does not yet exist.
3. Transform an intuition
An idea must then be assessed, organised, and developed. This is where a second actor comes into play, namely the Executive Control Network (ECN).
Unlike the Default Mode Network, this network is engaged when we need to consciously direct our thinking, particularly to :
While the DMN imagines freely, the ECN selects. It identifies promising ideas, structures our reasoning, and transforms an intuition into a coherent project :
4. The conductor
Recent research has also highlighted the role of the Salience Network (SN).
Its role is less visible, but equally fundamental. It determines which information deserves our attention and cognitive resources, while facilitating the transition between the DMN and the ECN.
Without this ability to select what is relevant, our mind would be overwhelmed by an endless stream of associations, never managing to construct a coherent thought.
- Disruptions -
We can now return to our original question : « Why does creativity seem to disappear when we are mentally overloaded? »
Because these different networks need to cooperate smoothly. Yet cognitive overload keeps the brain in a near-constant state of vigilance :
The brain gradually loses its ability to move freely between its different modes of operation. It remains « stuck » managing immediate concerns. This does not destroy creativity; it reduces the opportunities for it to emerge.
Today, our environment places greater demands on these resources than ever before: constant notifications, information overload, an ever-growing number of tasks, pressure to perform, hyperconnectivity, and personal or professional concerns...
As a result, creation, which belongs more to the realm of exploration than survival, is pushed into the background.
- The paradox -
We often imagine that being creative means allowing the mind to wander freely, without constraint. Conversely, some believe that only rigorous discipline can produce high-quality ideas.
Neuroscience shows that lasting creativity requires both :
Originality rarely emerges from absolute chaos. It arises from a balance between freedom and structure.
Inspiration, therefore, is not always a sudden flash. It is often the silent outcome of a long cognitive process.
Conclusions
We often attribute our creative difficulties to a lack of inspiration. This interpretation is understandable. It is also reassuring.
If inspiration has left us, we only need to wait for it to return. But creativity does not disappear, it waits for our cognitive resources to become available again.
